First impression was not very good. The girl at the front desk was curt and unfriendly. Something you rarely find in Panama. She needs to be replaced. AC in the room was noisy. Housekeeping didn't remove dirty glasses from the room or replace the liner in the ice bucket. In fact, the water from the melted ice was still in the bucket. Dirty dishes were left in the hallway near our room. Front desk called us a taxi; the roundtrip fare was $32. Should have been no more than $10. The rooms are larger than most with comfortable beds. But for less money one can stay downtown in a safe, cleaner, and less expensive room. Taxi fare is $5 or less to just about anyplace in the city. This hotel is remote, though it does have a good view of the canal.

Too far from downtown Panama City and hotel taxis were very expensive. Overall the hotel and restaurant are dirty. With labor prices in Panama there is simply no excuse for a hotel to be dirty.

• Restaurant Tip : TGI Fridays is the restaurant attached to the hotel. Generally TGI Fridays are good places to eat near hotels and in airports. We sat on the deck because it has a great view of the fishing boats and yachts just outside the canal. However, the area was very dirty. It was quite obvious the area hadn't been cleaned very well at all for a long time. We ordered drinks but were afraid to order food. An excellent dinner choice would be at the end of the causeway. But do not use the hotel taxis. Lena y Carbona is right on the water. Excellent food, great service, and reasonable prices.

If it is your first trip to Panama make sure you book the room with the canal view. Your balcony will overlook the boats going in and out of the canal 24 hours a day. It is always wise to use the hotel taxi's as most do speak english and they will only charge $15 an hour to show you all the sites. You should have them take you to Mayaflores Locks so you can go through the observation platform overlooking the canal operating with boats going through the locks. Another great stop is Quarry Heights [Ancon Hill] which is the tallest hill so you overlook the entire old and new Panama City,canal and ocean veiws with the vultures flying over head. The hotel also has TJ Fridays connected to it with great Ribs and Icetea. There are 2 other great food places with Ranchito and the Yacht Club on the Causeway.

The locationis great as it is the only hotel overlooking the Americas Bridge and the start of the Panama Canal. The walkway at the back of the hotel is an excellent place to walk or jog along the water from the hotel to the end of the Causeway. The breakfast included with the room is a bonus with much to choose from.

The hotel always has coffee available in the lobby every morning but didn't have hot water for people to have tea. It is 5-10 minutes outside the city center.

• Shopping Tip : Make sure you visit Allbrook Mall by hotel taxi and ask them to return to pick you up at a certain time which they will gladly do for you. Most of the Department Stores will require you to check in any packages you are carring before you are allowed in. The security is always around with all stores having armed security guards along with police in different areas.

Good room and location for price of $85 per nite. Not worth rack rate of $140 per nite. Breakfast was adequate but could use more variety.
