Guatemala City is divided into 21 Zonas (zone), with Zone 1 located in the heart of the city, while the subsequent zones are numbered counter-clockwisely around the city in spiral. The roads running from south to north are called ‘avenidas’ and ‘calle’ is the name given to the highways running from west to east.
To get around the city, most tourists use Zone 1 as the starting point. As the heart of the city, Zone 1 is home of important government and religious buildings, and numerous historic sites, including the National Palace and La Sala de Recepcion (The Reception Hall). Apart from Zone 1, there are also several attractions you should not miss in the other zones of the city, such as the UNESCO world heritage site Antigua in Zone 2, and Kaminal Juyu, the important Pre-Hispanic archeological site in zone 7.
In term of nightlife and entertainment, Guatemala City offers lively ambience which is second to none to the other big cities. Known as the Zona Viva, Zone 10 is a destination that all shoppers and night-owls should not miss. There, you will find an array of restaurants, nightclubs and shopping centers.
