Situated close to the Himalayas, Lumbini is only a 3-hour car drive from Tensen or 8 hours from Kathmandu. Although Lumbini is a small city, it is full of religious and historical significances and there are hundreds of thousands of tourists visiting this city every year.
If you are a culture lover, Lumbini has three major museums awaiting you: Lumbini Museum, Lumbini International Research Institute and Kapilvastu Museum. Each has unique displays but all portray the historical information relating to the Buddha’s life. It is worth visiting all of them, particularly if you’re interested in Buddhism.
There are also many new temples built by foreign pilgrims in Lumbini such as the China temple, Myanmar temple (a.k.a. Lokamani Cula Pagoda), Japan temple and Vietnam temple.
Lumbini is a year-round destination with pleasant weather all year round. The best time to visit is from September to March. However, tourists are recommended to bring woolen clothing when visiting during winter.
