Yangon was designed to combine those of colonial buildings on tree-shaded streets with Buddhist temples and open-air markets. Yangon is also called ‘the Garden City of the East’ because of its greenness of shady parks and handsome lakes surrounding the city.
Most history lovers enjoy visiting Allied War Memorial Cemetery in remembrance of those Commonwealth and Allied soldiers who had died during WWII. It is about 32 km from Yangon. Another recommended attraction is at Martyrs’ Mausoleum, a memorial to Burma’s hero, Bogyoke Aung San.
The thing that shouldn’t be missed when visiting Yangon is to relish the beauty of the artistic Pagoda. One of the most famous pagodas is Shwedagon Pagoda, plated with over 30 tons of gold. It is called a jewel of Mekong. Other pagodas like Botahtaung Pagoda, Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda, Kaba Aye Pagoda, Mai-Lamu Pagoda, Mahavijaya Pagoda and Sule Pagoda have never disappointed any tourists. They are unique and full of magnificent ancient tales.
